Urban Dictionary in the classroom

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville no longer recognizes words used in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Only words or phrases found in the Urban Dictionary can be used for any and all writing assignments within the university.

In order to ensure that students use Urban Dictionary correctly, the university has dropped UW-Platteville Studies from the curriculum and has added an Urban Dictionary 101 course instead.

“I think the Urban Dictionary is way more useful in conversations today, so I look forward to taking the class,” freshman human biology major Airwrecka Walkanude said.

The basis of the class will be different from normal lectures. Students will be teaching the class to other students. The grade in the class will be based off of how many words or phrases students submit to the dictionary that translate into sexual phrases. Students with more than 50 words or phrases will receive an “A” in the course as well as a free condom and personal massager.

“My friends call me the walking garbage mouth, that is why I was selected to teach the class. My mind is always in the gutter and I only think of words and phrases in the way they are defined in the Urban Dictionary,” junior criminal justice major Ryan Whatshisface said.

In addition to their grade, students can also receive extra credit if their name translates into something sexual, or a way to describe a body part.

“My name is Jordan, so I got a boat load of extra credit for this class,” sophomore geography major Jordan Dingleburry said.

With the addition of Urban Dictionary 101, many other UW campuses are following UW-Platteville’s trend to adapt new language type courses. The UW-Whitewater for example has added a course in Yik Yak translation.

However, UW-Platteville is the only college campus in the state that requires students to learn how to use the Urban Dictionary and apply it to their other courses.

“I found Urban Dictionary 101 the most helpful in my Writing for Publication class,” junior English major Laura Lightyear said. “I never realized what using the word said so often truly meant until I took the class.”
