Students come together to participate in inaugural Sand Volleyball tournament

Mud turned to sand when this semester’s Mud Volleyball tournament had to be moved from Memorial Park to Circle Drive. The tournament, held on Sept. 20, had to be moved due to the trees and debris that remain in Memorial Park after this summer’s tornado.

“The area [adjacent to Memorial Park] that we would usually use for mud volleyball was being used for school team practices and could not be used for this event,” Samantha Way, junior media studies major said. Way coordinated the event for Campus Programming and Relations.

Bragging rights, in a tourney filled with colorful team names, went to How I Set Your Mother. The event attracted 14 other teams: Kiss my Ace, Full Rihanna, Hug Shack Heroes, Southwest Spikers, Devil Donkeys, Sets in the Sand, Team B-rock, Sup Guys, Set for Life, Average Joes, We Work for Sets, Delta Sigma Phi, Thrillas of Manila and Garbage.

At the event there were only two different courts for teams to be competing on but the area around the courts was filled with other teams practicing or just playing around.

“I’m impressed with the turnout. Campus always does a great job of having events like this that bring students together.” Kendal Kendrick, senior biology major, said.

“I love that games are only to 15, so we have some time to just hang out in between games and I love that there’s music playing,” Adrienne Oldenburg, senior communication technologies major, said.

“It’s just a fun event for people to come hang out that’s not that far,” Way said. “We like to do it every semester just to have fun.”

Junior Daniel Smith, who played with the Devil Donkeys, said the event was “really fun and well organized.”
