Brazilian Karaoke

The Portuguese Language Club hosted Brazilian Karaoke night, which brought in approximately 30 attendees.

The event was held on April 24 in Doudna Hall.

Andre Menezes, the president of the PLC, was one of the students in charge of organizing the karaoke night.

“The karaoke night was not only a night for fun song and dance but also a night to introduce Portuguese culture to anyone who attended,” said Menezes. “It is an event to try and welcome Americans to what Portuguese song and dance is like.”

Menezes said that the club is new on campus and is looking for different ways to attract new members.

Portuguese Lecturer Denise Osborne said that this is the fourth time the club has met this semester. They met three times prior for the Fashion Carnival, International Dinner and Brazilian Dance.

“The Brazilian dance is actually a form of martial arts incorporated into a dance called Capoeira,” Osborne said. “It was really fun to watch and it was another event that is a great introduction into Portuguese culture. The karaoke night is also a great event to attend and learn about Portuguese culture because music is culture.”

The karaoke night was a learning experience for anyone trying to learn how to speak Portuguese.

“It was very interesting and a great way to learn by watching and reading the words,” Grace Ann Bakken said. “It helped me learn even more about how words are used and spoken in the Portuguese language. It was a lot of fun too.”

The night featured many different songs, both international and American. A majority of the students in attendance were from Brazil and it was one of their last chances for them to see one another before going back home.
