Center for the Arts Presents: Bo Burnham

For the first time ever the Center for the Arts (CFA) and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville is hosting a “CFA Presents” show that is not part of the Performing Arts Series for the fall 2012 semester. Bo Burnham, 22-year-old YouTube and Comedy Central superstar, will be performing at 8:00 p.m. on Oct. 5 in the Brodbeck Concert Hall.
As a comedian, singer, songwriter, actor and internet sensation, Bo Burnham has recently been named one of “12 Rising Stars of Comedy” by Entertainment Weekly as well as becoming a number one artist on Billboard’s Comedy Chart in the first week of releasing his full-length LP “Bo Burnham.”
Burnham became famous because he wrote songs, posted them on the internet and some people came to believe that he was funny. His career exploded and he started to play live shows at clubs, theaters, colleges and other public venues. In August of 2008, he became the youngest person to record a Comedy Central special. He follows in the footsteps of Eddie Murphy, when he joined Saturday Night Live, in how he became successful at a such a young age.
With an edge of satire that pleases the masses of young adults across the country, Burnham  has been brought to the forefront of American young-adult culture with funny, visually ridiculous and a “that’s so true” melodies in his performances.
Kayla Leibfreid, senior Public Relations major and CFA Arts Facilities and Series Assistant, has high expectations for Burnham’s performance.
“I think the students will find him incredibly funny and have a lot of fun,” said Leibfreid. “I think the tickets will sell out because of his target audience being so prominent on campus, and we sold 100 student tickets on the first day of sales.”
Burnham’s hilarity is directly related to  people his age. What he thinks is funny has a very good chance of relating to students at UW-Platteville. “He requested a large cheese pizza and Red Bull to have before the show,” said Leibfreid. “He’s amazingly just like everyone else our age.”
Students around campus also have varying opinions on the comedian such as sophomore industrial engineering major Brandon Chappell.
“It’s cool, a big famous guy that’s on Comedy Central, here in Platteville,” said Chappell. “I want to go.”
“I don’t know anything about him, but comedians are funny. I would totally go,” said senior civil engineering major Edgar Hernandez.
Tickets for this event are on sale now at $44 for general admission, $40 for faculty and senior citizens, $26 for children under 18 and $22 for UW-Platteville students. This show may not be suitable for those under 18 or over 29.
To purchase tickets, go to the University Box Office, located in the lower level of Ullsvik Hall. Phone orders can be made by calling (608) 342-1298 or toll free at 1-877-727-1CFA. Tickets are also available online 24/7 at tickets.uwplatt.edu.
