Peace Corps recruits at UWP

Students from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh were given the chance to learn more about the Peace Corps and the opportunities the Peace Corps has for graduates at the “Life is Calling” webinar held March 20 in the Wisconsin Room at the Markee Pioneer Student Center.

The webinar provided basic and in-depth information about the Peace Corps.

“This is the first Peace Corps webinar we have held,” said Jennifer Krahn, Associate Outreach Specialist for the UW-Platteville Study Abroad program.  “We are excited to have students interested.”

UW-Platteville and UW-Oshkosh were the only two schools in the UW System to participate in this webinar.

“The recruiter at the University of Wisconsin-Madison contacted the UW schools and invited them to participate in the webinar,” said Krista Uhrig, Program Coordinator for the UW-Platteville Study Abroad program.  “There is a push to connect with other UW schools.”

With 103 undergraduate alumni serving, UW-Madison is currently ranked third in the large schools across the US for producing Peace Corps volunteers.

“It’s a great way to get a cross-cultural experience,” Uhrig said.  “Two years in the Peace Corps gives you an advantage in that arena.”

Students attending the webinar learned they could apply to volunteer in one of six program areas and be assigned to work in one of the 76 countries where the Peace Corps is present.  Prior to beginning their service, volunteers complete a three month training session.  During this time, they receive language, technical and cultural instruction.  Volunteers accepted into the program live, learn and work overseas for two years.

“I would enjoy the flexibility to create my own work,” said Alisha Slowey, Resident Director with Residence Life and counselor education graduate student.  “The cultural dynamics and travel experience are some of the benefits I see.”

While serving in the Peace Corps, volunteers receive a monthly stipend to cover housing and living expenses.  In addition, all travel expenses are paid for and medical and dental care are provided.  Some of the benefits volunteers receive upon completion of their service are a $7,425 readjustment allowance as well as student loan assistance, deferment or partial cancellation.
