Horticulture Club combined efforts with Clay Club to hold their annual Valentine’s Day Plant Sale. Clay Club made some of the pots for the plants and Horticulture Club grew all the plants in the university’s greenhouse for the event.

Horticulture Club and Clay Club hosted their annual Valentine’s Day Plant Sale, Feb. 13 and 14.

The sale was held at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in the Wisconsin Room of the Markee Pioneer Student Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for both days.

“We sell different plants that we grow right here on campus,” Rollin Metzger, senior soil and crop science major, said.

UW-Platteville has a state-of-the-art, 6,000 square-foot greenhouse located on campus, as well as 30,000 square feet of themed gardens surrounding the greenhouse complex.

Students and members of the Horticulture Club are able to utilize these facilities for hands-on learning, including growing plants for different events, such as the Valentine’s Day Sale.

Horticulure Club’s proceeds go towards its various conferences and competitions throughout the year.

This March, the club will be traveling to Fort Collins, Colo. to compete in the 38th Annual Student Career Days.

Students involved in horticulture programs from across the country take part in the annual three-day competition, which is carried out by the Student Career Days.

The contests emphasize the importance of developing the necessary skills in order to succeed in the green industry.

Hosted by Colorado State University, the conference also includes a career fair for those who are willing to attend the event.

The Clay Club conglomerates with the Horticulture Club annually in order to showcase and sell their pottery.

Along with pots for the plants, they have a wide variety of other designs available to purchase.

“These sales help raise money for trips and travel expenses,” Katerina Asperison, junior criminal justice major, said.

One of the most popular destinations for the club is Chicago because it contains an abundance of influential artwork.

Artists are eligible to receive a portion of the overall compensation for items sold throughout the different sales, while the remaining profit goes to the Clay Club treasury.

In celebration of Mother’s Day, they will host a three-day sale outside of the Art Building on campus in May.

Both clubs can be found on PioneerLink.
