Women’s golf team finishes last at WIAC Championship

A long fall season for the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women’s golf team came to an end Sunday as the team placed seventh at the WIAC Championship Tournament held at Lake Arrowhead Golf Course in Nekoosa.

The Pioneers posted scores of 369, 370 and 350 in the three-day, 54-hole tournament.

UW-Platteville finished one shot behind sixth-place finisher University of Wisconsin-River Falls and three shots behind fifth-place finisher University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

“We had higher expectations than what we showed on the first two days of the tournament, but on the last day, we played to our potential and it showed as we scored a 350,” junior Katie Gregorich said.

Top finishers for the UW-Platteville team were freshman Sydney Kilcoin, who tied a career-low round of 78 on the last day to bring her score to 260, finishing in 14th place.

Sophomore Taylor Egnarski shot a personal-low for the tournament (88) on the final day to bring her score to 270 and a tie for 20th place.

Freshman Stephanie Baribeau improved her score by nine strokes on the final day, scoring a 271 and earning a tie for 22nd place.

Gregorich scored a 294 with a tie for 41st.

Finally, junior Ashley Morales scored a 306, finishing in 46th place.

Kilcoin and Baribeau emerged as integral parts of the team this season.

“It’s reassuring to know we have consistent scores to rely on with Sydney and Stephanie to help the team in case some of us don’t have our greatest matches,” Gregorich said.

With the season over, Gregorich has optimism for the future of the Pioneer women’s golf team.

“Looking back onto this past year, I think we did a lot better than what I expected.  With two freshmen coming in and adapting to the whole college atmosphere, I was not expecting (to play) as well as we did,” Gregorich said.  “I think that we have a lot of potential for the spring and in the next year that I will be here for.  Also, in the next few years, I predict we will still have a strong set of women for the team.”
