The first book in Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles series, “Cinder,” was written back in 2012. This series takes classic fairy princess stories and adds a sci-fi twist to them, starting with Cinderella. Linh Cinder is a young cyborg that lives in New Beijing as a mechanic who supports her wicked stepfamily that treats her poorly because she is a cyborg.
However, this all changes when the Crown Prince Kai comes to her shop looking for help fixing his personal android. Cinder is then pulled into intergalactic politics and backstabbing as she tries to help the prince find the lost Lunar Princess, who is the only person that could stop an upcoming war.
This book is not just a young adult romance, but a fun sci-fi adventure that focuses on a young woman shaking and trying to change the world for the better. There is a little romance but no love triangles, which is very different from a lot of young adult novels. The first book in the Lunar Chronicles series has a good mix of everything that people would like in a book.
It has familiar ideas and characters, but also some fun and interesting twists which make it great to read or reread.
