Lauren Roberts’s “Powerless” has recently blown up on TikTok. The book follows Paedyn, who was born in a world where everyone has powers and those who don’t are driven out of their homes or killed at the hands of the Executioner.
Paedyn has a problem with that seeing how she is one of the many people without powers and is trying to pass as someone with lesser powers to not be driven out of the only home she has ever known. One day she ends up saving a man named Kai after he was attacked in an alley. Kai thanks her and that is when she realizes that she has caught the eye of the Executioner. However, before she can do anything, she is pulled into a world of politics and adventures as she has to fight for her life and keep her secret.
This book has a lot of popular tropes that BookTok loves: A sad moral grey man who loves the main female character and would do anything for her. A female character who is trying to do the best she can in the world she loves with nothing but her wits and a knife. And as many people have pointed out, it is basically a mix of Hunger Games and Red Queen. So, if you are interested in that, pick it up at the library or bookstore.
