Cassandra Clare wrote a book back in 2007 called “City of Bones,” which was received very well due to the popularity of YA love triangles and supernatural elements. This popularity led to a movie that wasn’t received very well and a television show that strayed very far from the book. So, was the source material really that good?
In the book, Clary Fary goes to a party with her friend Simon where they see someone get pulled aside by a few people who kill the person. However, no one sees it but her. Now she sees the people who killed that guy everywhere and learns about the Shadow World, or the world of monsters and monster hunters. Now she is pulled into this world to try and save her mother who was an ex-Shadowhunter and wanted a better life for Clary.
This book, like a lot of the early 2000s YA books, is a product of its time with a young girl that finds out they are The Chosen One. This Chosen One then has to save the world and their family while two love interests compete for her attention and love. However, it is different because of the queer background characters and interesting worldbuilding.
