Rusty Quill released “The Magnus Archives” in 2016 to international acclaim. Jonathan Sims wrote most of the podcast as well as voiced the lead character with Alexander J. Newall who directed this cosmic horror podcast, which ended up winning “Best Audio Drama or Fiction Podcast” in 2019 Discover Pod Awards.
This podcast follows the new Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute, Jonathan Sims, and his coworkers. The Magnus Institute is a fictional London-based institute that researches and catalogs paranormal experiences and interactions. These experiences seem random and unbelievable, especially to Jonathan Sims, but over the course of four seasons the stories become connected and reveal a darker hidden truth that Jonathan Sims and his team need to fight.
The podcast has a great atmosphere and storytelling. The story almost feels real and sucks in the listener. The horror element is in both the reports that the team gets but also in the teams’ daily life, and over time, it really builds the horror and the world they live in. The podcast end in 2021 but its sequel podcast, “The Magnus Protocol,” came out in 2024.
