“Artemis Fowl” is a young adult fantasy heist book written by Irish author Eoin Colfer. Colfer was a schoolteacher that turned to writing. He publishes not only the Artemis Fowl series but also several other series, graphic novels and the fifth and final edition of “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.”
The story of “Artemis Fowl” is told from many points of view but mostly follows a 12-year-old criminal prodigy Artemis Fowl II, who wants to reclaim his family’s wealth and comes up with a plan that involves kidnapping a fairy. This puts him, his butler and his butler’s sisters at odds with the fairy society, especially after they kidnap LEPRecon Captain Holly Short and hold her for ransom. This becomes a tense standoff at the Fowl Manor as both sides try to gain an upper hand on one another.
This is a great book, and it sets up so much of the world and the characters in it over the course of 280 pages. The fairy society is a fun and unique society, filled with many cool characters that will come back in later stories. Artemis Fowl has a young Kaz Brekker vibe to him with big ideas and a bigger brain, that grows and changes not only in this book but also over the course of the series. It is a YA novel that is worth the read and the reread.
