Lola Young is an up-and-coming pop artist whose single “Messy” has recently been tearing up the charts. This single also encapsulates the album it comes from, “This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyways,” in every way, with self-acknowledging lyrics about imperfections in Young herself, while still destroying the guy she’s singing about.
The instrumentation throughout the album is dark in tone, while being light in spirit, centering on snare drums, bass guitar and synths. If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if you combined The Strokes and Olivia Rodrigo, this is what you’d be looking for.
This album still contains plenty of variety, from “Conceited”, a rock-heavy track, to “Big Brown Eyes,” a groovy dance track, or “You Noticed,” a slow ballad track.
Despite this being Young’s second album, this feels both like an introduction of Young’s work to the world and a showcase of the future of her career. This album brims with potential that listeners excited to see soon.
