The first Marvel movie of the year came out on Feb. 14, just in time for Valentine’s Day. “Captain America: Brave New World” is the first movie with Anthony Mackie’s character as Captain America, and the reviews seem to be mixed, with audiences giving it an 80 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and critics at 51 percent.
Sam Wilson, who has recently entered the role of Captain America, is working with his new Falcon, Joaquin Torres. The two of them would carry out special ops’ missions for the United States until one day, they are invited to the White House to celebrate a recent treaty that is going to set up world trade around the Celestial Island. The celebration is halted by an assassination attempt from Sam’s close friend and mentor, Isaiah Bradley. Sam and Joaquin now are hunting down the truth while being hunted down by the government.
The movie is a return to form for Marvel movies. There is one throwaway line about the multiverse in the end credit scene, but the movie’s focus is on Sam trying to find out who framed his friend and why they are trying to hurt the newly elected President Thaddeus Ross. There are several interesting action scenes, as well as good emotional moments between characters. The plot wasn’t that hard to understand, even if audiences missed several past Marvel movies. Overall, it is a refreshing step for Marvel as they hopefully continue to step away from the multiverse and refocus on their new phase.
