Joey Batey is famous for his role as Jaskier the Bard in Netflix’s TV show “The Witcher,” based on the video game of the same name. However, before Batey’s time on the show, he and his friend, Madeleine Hyland, formed a band called The Amazing Devil.
Batey and Hyland met at Royal Shakespeare Company as aspiring actors and decided to come together and make music that “sad people can listen to at train stations,” according to Batey. They have had several albums come out and want to make more music in the future.
The second studio album they made called “The Horror and the Wild” is a hauntingly beautiful album exploring the breakdown of a relationship between two people who really love and care about each other. The album covers the highs and lows with songs like “Fair” and “Marbles,” where the characters talk about their love and desire to be with each other. They also explore loss in “The Unwanted Animal” and “Battle Cries” as the relationship ends, and the characters don’t know each other anymore.
The album is very lyrical and has a beautiful folky tone. Both Batey and Hyland have voices that complement each other well and the instruments in the background have a very whimsical feel even when the message does not match it.
