Natural disasters are beginning to turn not-so-natural as climate change affects weather patterns and the intensity of natural disasters that occur within certain areas around the globe. Climate change has impacted everyone for years and seems to be rapidly increasing the numbers of natural disasters.
With this rise in disasters, many scientists across the globe are pushing to make changes regarding climate change. They suspect that global warming will worsen the condition of these natural disasters.
“The frequency of disasters caused by heat waves, tropical cyclones and wildfires will increase considerably,” Sebastian Acevedo and Natalija Novta stated in an article about global warming by the International Monetary Fund. “While scientists expect that the overall frequency of tropical cyclones will decline in a warmer world, they also expect the storms that form to be more intense; which will likely result in more disasters.”
Around the world, people have been noticing the increase of heat waves and wildfires. Along the ocean, the frequency of tropical cyclones and tsunamis have also been linked to global warming.
In an article by Richard Aster, who analyzed NASA’s Ocean warming data, “The oceans have absorbed about 90% of the excess heat connected to rising greenhouse gas emissions from human activities in recent decades. That excess heat can translate into more powerful storms.”
Water levels in the oceans will also be increased because of the glaciers and ice caps melting due to global warming.
With the increase in natural disasters like tsunamis and tropical cyclones, the water level rising has the potential to make these natural disasters even more dangerous as the water could reach farther inland.
