The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Fransisco 49ers 25-22, winning Super Bowl LVIII on Feb. 11. The game ended up extending into overtime with multiple lead changes over the course of the game.
This marks the first time in 20 years where a team has won two Super Bowls in a row, with the last being Tom Brady and the Patriots in 2003 and 2004.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has now racked up three Super Bowl rings, and he is now one of only five quarterbacks who hold that title. He still sits firmly behind Brady, who boasts seven wins.
Mahomes, who now has three MVPs, was asked if this was the beginning of a Chiefs dynasty after the game. “Yeah. It is the start of one. We are not done. We have got a young team (and) we are going to keep this thing going” he said.
Mahomes was not the only one to be put into the record books on Sunday. The record for the longest field goal in Super Bowl history changed not once, but twice. 49ers kicker Jake Moody hit a 55-yard field goal in the second quarter, breaking a 30-year record. Then in the third quarter, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker toppled the fresh record by kicking a 57-yard field goal.
This was the first Super Bowl to go into overtime since the NFL changed their rules on playoff overtime back in 2022. 49ers defensive lineman Arik Armstead stated that many players on the team were unaware of what the new rules were, saying, “I did not even know about the new playoff overtime rules. It was a surprise to me.” It is unclear if this significantly affected how the 49ers played in overtime.
Super Bowl LVIII was the longest Super Bowl ever recorded and the seventh longest NFL game, clocking in at 74 minutes and 57 seconds. Despite this, it was still the most viewed Super Bowl in history, with over 120 million people tuning in.
