New England Patriots safety and team captain, Jabrill Peppers, 29, was arrested on Oct. 6 after an alleged altercation at a home in a Boston suburb. Peppers was detained on charges of assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, strangulation and possession of a Class B substance believed to be cocaine.
Police say they responded to a disturbance early in the morning on Oct. 6, where the caller had indicated a physical altercation had broken out between two people. A victim was treated on the scene as Peppers was taken into custody.
Peppers pleaded not guilty to all charges the same day the NFL placed him on the Commissioner’s exempt list. Players on the list remain on the roster but are barred from practicing or playing in games.
Patriots Coach Jared Mayo spoke in a press conference on Oct. 9. “Just to start off, on Jabrill (Peppers), I just want to be clear that really any act of domestic violence is unacceptable for us,” Mayo said. “As a team, no matter if you’re a player, or staff member, we’re wholeheartedly against any type of domestic violence.”
Mayo went on to state that Peppers needed to go through due process before the NFL made their final decision as to whether or not he would remain in the league. He also stated Peppers had called him prior to his arrest and the team had informed the league of the situation.
Peppers was named a team captain for the first time this season, having agreed to a three-year extension with the Patriots worth up to $30 million in July. Peppers entered the NFL as a first-round draft pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2017, joining the New York Giants two years later before finally arriving in Foxborough in 2022.
Peppers’ next hearing is scheduled for Nov. 22.
