With Donald Trump back in office, there has been a lot of discussion about buying Greenland. The reason behind it seems unclear, with Trump posting on Truth Social that it is for “national security,” but it is uncertain how this will impact national security. Regardless, Denmark does not want to sell the land, and with Trump still insisting on buying it, several people put together a petition for California to be bought by Denmark.
This petition was started by Xavier Dutoit and a group of friends who want Americans to understand how crazy the request is.
“Americans didn’t seem to grasp how unhinged and absurd it was for any country’s President — especially in a stable democracy that the USA claims to be — to offer or threaten to take over another sovereign country’s territory,” Dutoit wrote in an email to The Associated Press.
The website is full of funny and satirical content about the benefits to Denmark if it were to buy California, as well as other humorous things, like how they hope to crowdfund and hit the goal of 1 trillion dollars by asking for “200,000 kroner from every Dane. Skip a few lattes, and you’re golden,” or how they will send over “our best negotiators – Lego executives and the cast of Borgen.”
Regardless of the content on the website, the petition has gathered more than 250,000 signatures, drawing attention to how absurd the request to Denmark is.
