Two people were killed and 25 others were injured after a car drove into a crowd in Mannheim, Germany on Monday, March 3. The crowd was celebrating an annual carnival celebration at the time of the incident.
German police stated that the 40-year-old suspect, Alexander Scheurmann, drove his car into a group of people in the Planken area of Manheim city center. The two people killed in the attack have been identified as an 83-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man.
A search of the area was immediately launched and Scheurmann was arrested. He is being investigated for double murder and multiple attempted murders. Officials believe Scheurmann acted alone.
Scheurmann is said to have shot himself as police moved in to make the arrest but survived and was taken to a hospital for medical treatment, according to the German interior minister.
“The perpetrator had to serve a short prison sentence for bodily harm 10 years ago. There was also a case of drunk driving,” Romeo Schussler, a senior public prosecutor said. “The last time he was noticed was in 2018 for hate speech on Facebook.”
However, a motive for the attack remains under investigation.
