On Oct 2., Kwik Trip announced its new cash transaction policy. This policy, which impacts all Kwik Trip and Kwik Star locations, rounds down all cash transactions to the nearest five cents. This change, which is active immediately, is in favor of the customers, honoring the company’s guest-centered approach.
The decision follows the U.S. Treasury Department’s announcement in May to end penny production. The department stated that the United States Mint would stop production once it ran out of blank templates, expected in early 2026. President Trump previously posted in February on his site, Truth Social, that he had directed the Secretary of the US Treasury to cease production. This change was a long time coming, as this will be the seventh bill aimed at ending one-cent coin production. Kwik Trip has stated that its stores are already running out of the coin, prompting the need for new policies. The company stated it will continue this approach until a permanent legislative solution is enacted.
Pennies remain legal tender and will still be accepted at stores, but Kwik Trip register systems will automatically round transactions according to the company’s new policy. Digital and card-based transactions will remain the exact purchase amount, instead of being rounded.
Scott Zietlow, CEO and President of Kwik Trip, shared in a statement, “At Kwik Trip, we’re committed to making everyday transactions simple and fair. This change reflects our ongoing focus on guest experience. We apologize for any confusion this may create for our guests.”
