Dear Editor,
I went to the Dean of Students’ “Sex in the Dark” event on Feb. 22 and was taken aback by the lack of respect shown to the experts by the sorority Kappa Alpha Sigma.
KAΣ took up the entire first two rows of the event and spent several minutes playing with a female condom, flinging it at one another along with other attendees of the event.
Additionally, KAΣ mocked the experts and the conversations being held at the event.
Several members of the group openly laughed and rolled their eyes when the topic of LGBTQ+ and polyamorous relationships was brought up in the conversation.
Disparaging comments were also made by KAΣ towards the experts with one member calling one of the speakers a “pervert” after the speaker started responding to a question regarding kink culture.
The entire sorority displayed extremely disrespectful behavior with members constantly talking over the speakers during the discussion, snapchatting one another during the event and leaving their garbage on the floor when the event concluded.
Something I personally found extremely disgusting was the reaction of KAΣ after the subject of male rape victims came up in conversation.
A few of the members rolled their eyes and made blabbing hand gestures insinuating that men cannot be raped. Other members of the sorority started laughing when the topic was brought up.
According to the UW-Platteville website, “sorority life staff are dedicated to assisting in creating a positive living, learning and governing environment for students.” If that is the purpose of sorority life, they have failed.
At an event where people are there to learn about safe sex and have an open, healthy dialogue, it is extremely disgusting that the loudest population in the audience is the one openly mocking and laughing at the topics.
Attendees of these events go so they do not feel alone or judged and should be open to learning about sexual wellness. If the KAΣ sorority cannot handle that, then they should not be attending these events.
