The American Marketing Association offers many ways for college students to jump-start their career in marketing. A chapter was recently started at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and offers students career resources, professional development, marketing competition participation; and tools and resources to help students grow in the marketing field. George Krueger and Les Hollingsworth, assistant professors of business and accounting, are members of the American Marketing Association and advisers to UW-Platteville’s chapter.
“We thought it would be a good opportunity for the students to be able to actively engage in an organization that can provide many resources and enhance their academic careers,” Krueger said. “We hope to have an active and dynamic organization that engages the students.”
Casey Carignan, senior business administration major, chose to join the Platteville chapter of AMA for many reasons. “I want to gain more knowledge in marketing and to hopefully network with professionals in the industry,” Carignan said. “I also hope to make new friends and connect with potential employers. I’d also like to be able to attend conferences and competitions.”
Krueger hopes that the UW-Platteville chapter will offer opportunities in the spirit of the 360-degree student. “We want to enhance the student experience through membership in AMA and help the students prepare for a career in marketing,” Krueger said. “We hope to offer career opportunities with the many valuable resources AMA has to offer.”
Jessica Sherman, a senior business administration major, is looking forward to the opportunity to meet people who are also going into the marketing field.
“I also hope that it will give me a better idea what I want do with marketing,” Sherman said.
Sherman also hopes to meet professionals in the marketing industry and develop a good relationship with them; hopefully, it will lead her to a job. Sherman would like to be involved in different projects to get a feel for what aspect of marketing she would like to do in the future.
