Local businesses share tips for interview attire
Many tips and tricks about what to wear to a job interview were given out Jan. 30 at 8 p.m. at Campus Programming and Relations’ style show.
Local businesses such as Lancaster’s MaCandis Boutique and Walkers Clothing-Shoes, Dodgeville’s Kozelka & Wall Clothing and Dubuque’s Graham’s came to Velzy Commons and dressed student models to show what to wear to a job interview.
The models wore appropriate attire and modeled their clothes on stage. The business owners emceed and explained why they chose to dress them in each outfit. They also explained what type of job interview the outfits would be suitable for.
Clothes that are inappropriate for a job interview, including bright colored jeans with holes paired with a sweatshirt, were also displayed. Business owners said that those outfits would not be a good way to represent oneself to future employers.
“Hearing the tips the different boutique owners have while introducing the outfits was my favorite part,” junior media studies major, Brittany Schmidt said.
Angie Gruetzmacher and Sarah Burks, owners of MaCandis Boutique, were part of the style show.
“For us this is not a sales pitch or a way to get more customers in our store, it is our chance to help out the students,” Burks said.
“Job interviews are a time for you to be comfortable and dress it down, it is not about the clothes it is about you,” said Gruetzmacher.
Booths were set up along the walls with business cards and samples of some of their clothing. Before and after the style show, attendees could talk with the business owners and ask them questions.
Individuals who came to the event were automatically entered for a chance to win a $50 gift card to any of the four different stores.
After the style show, students laid out their blankets and pillows to enjoy the film “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
