University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s Southwest Hall hosted its 9th annual Cake Walk on March 30. This year’s proceeds went to benefit American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison.

“Every year we have a couple of ideas of which charity to choose and then we vote in our meeting,” Southwest Hall Resident Director Bethany Keuter said. “We’ve been planning this event since January.” Every year a different charity is chosen. Heifer International, Freedom Honor Flight Network and Shriners Children’s Hospital are some of the charities that the cake walk has donated to in the past.

To make the cake walk possible, many students and community members donated approximately 100 baked goods.

Even though it was called a cake walk, there was not just cakes at the event. A variety of desserts were donated to satisfy the prospective winner’s sweet tooth.

The cake walk was put together by the resident assistants of Southwest Hall. They set up two circles with 20 numbers in each circle for participants who paid 50 cents a round to stand on. The walk was similar to the game musical chairs. Once the music started participants walked around the circle. When the music stopped they had to find an open number to stand on. Approximately two to three numbers were drawn each round and the person standing on the drawn number received a ticket to pick out the dessert of their choice.

“It’s [was] my lucky night,” civil engineering senior Benjamin Roper said. Roper won a baked good in four rounds of the walk.

UW-Platteville’s very own Pioneer Pete joined in on the fun as well. When asked about his thoughts of the event he gave a big thumbs up. Pioneer Pete participated in a few rounds of the cake walk and got the participants dancing along with him.
