In the band’s nearly decade-long run, Tropical F- Storm’s sound hasn’t sounded more disjointed and frankly insane than it did on their third album, “Deep States.” Recorded and released during the Covid-19 pandemic in frontman Gareth Liddiard and bassist Fiona Kitschin’s home, “Deep States” sees the band going in a starkly more lo-fi direction than their previous works.
The second track, “G.A.F.F.” is a perfect example of this sound. Short for “Give A F- Fatigue,” the song is about exactly that: being unable to care any longer about the increasing degree of insanity in the world. The sound of the song reflects this idea perfectly, with some of the roughest production the band has ever put out paired with chaotic guitar effects and samples.
While this certain sound works well in some tracks, others seem to stagger a bit, such as “Suburbiopia,” where the rough edges hardly blend well. Other songs such as “Reporting of a Failed Campaign” also suffer from the lower-fidelity sound, as they try to aim for a more clean and concise structure and end up being brought down due to it.
Though, the album ends off fantastic with “Legal Ghost,” a re-recording of an old song of Liddiard’s, also transitioning beautifully into “The Confinement of the Quarks,” a gorgeous, short instrumental outro.
Despite its flaws, “Deep States” is still a fun listen. It’s worth giving it a shot for anyone wants something unique and bizarre.
