Morrow Hall gives back to Platteville community

Morrow Hall hosted Morrow Hall Works Week and provided many opportunities for community service and ways to get involved in the Platteville community. Monday, Oct. 20-23, Morrow Hall helped out in the community by offering volunteers for tornado recovery, playing games and with reading to the elderly, gardening and cleaning the bus and downtown streets.

Every year Morrow Hall plans service events to give back to the community. In the fall, Morrow Hall and the campus community come together for a week full of service acts. In the spring, they host an auction and bid on service acts for the hall to do in the fall. The proceedings earned at the auction, then go to a charity that the hall chooses in advance.

“I wanted to volunteer and give back to the Platteville community because they are dealing with our campus being right next to them,” Resident Assistant at Morrow Hall Josh Roper said.

“It’s an annual event that Morrow Hall puts on to give back to the Platteville Community because the community is pretty great to the campus and the university so it’s a chance for students to give back,” Morrow Hall Senior Assistant Nate Sharenbrock said.

Morrow Hall Council President Trevor Hanson went to three other halls and asked them to volunteer with him and get involved.

“I like being able to connect the campus with the community. I feel like it’s our duty to give back to the community because they do a lot for us,” Hanson said.

Morrow Hall invited students of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville to join them in volunteering their time and giving back to the community.

This year, the tornado recovery cleanup at Memorial Park was the most popular service event.

“I liked the event we did on Monday where we were doing post tornado recovery. We were working with another organization, along the bank of the river where there were invasive species that had started to grow from the trees falling down,” Roper said.

In the spring, there will be an auction for the fall of 2015 service acts and donations will go towards a charity that has yet to be decided.
