“A Decade of Design” in Nohr Gallery
Event showcases costumes by Professor Sarah Strange
The Nohr Gallery has been hosting “A Decade of Design”, an exhibition of works from the last decade by UW-Platteville Costume Designer Sarah Strange since Jan. 27.
On display are 13 mannequins and one rack of clothes from different characters in shows produced during Strange’s time at UW-Platteville and UW-Madison. The opening of the gallery was a big event, bringing together community members, new and old students and campus staff. The Dean of LAE and Chancellor of UW-Platteville also made appearances to see the amazing work done over the past decade. Everyone gave high praise to Strange and her creations.
“It’s refreshing to work with an artist that understands the characters,” Professor Jeffrey Strange said, “She is one heck of a designer, and this has been a long time coming.”
“It is always an amazing experience,” former student Blair Knott added when asked about working with Strange on shows and in the costume shop. “She is a wonderful and understanding person.” Blair also noted that Strange is deserving of having her work recognized, and many seemed to echo those same remarks, talking about how she made design seem effortless and a perfect fit for each show and character.
Dr. Ann Farrelly commented that the department and the school are “very lucky to have her” both as a professor and as a designer, noting how much Strange cares about her students.
Strange explained that it is “great to show what we do in the costume shop” and was happy to show off her favorite pieces such as the Blue Dress from “Or” or the Lucifer costume from “Doctor Faustus.”
While not all of Sarah’s favorite pieces could be displayed in Nohr Gallery, she is happy that she had the opportunity to share some of the work that she and her students used to make each show feel real.
The display is running until February 22, 2023 and admission is free to the public. However, you can also see more of her work in the upcoming spring musical “Assassins” by John Weidman, which will run from March 29 to April 2, 2023 in the Center for the Arts.
