Movie Review: Free Guy

Release Date: August 2021

Rating: PG-13

Running time: 1 hr, 55min

A new action film starring Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery and many more. Ryan Reynolds portrays a bank teller who discovers that he is actually an NPC, non-player character, inside a brutal, open world video game.

This isn’t your normal video game movie. It’s full of comedy, action, a bit of romance and a lot of evolution. This movie addresses the idea of AI programing evolving in the form of a NPC bank teller named Guy. He started at the beginning of the film as a happy person content in his routine, but he starts to question if there is more to life than just going through the motions. Every player character is unique in the way they speak, dress, etc. because they are literal avatars.

The main conflict arises when an indie game developer is trying to prove the big wig of Guy’s world stole AI software and didn’t give them credits or royalties. The fight scenes throughout this film are spectacularly done. The CGI is well done and cohesive throughout the video game vs. real life sequences. This is a film for action fans and video game fans as well. I would rate this movie a solid 4.5 out of 5.
