Outside the Window Lived War
And when they scampered to our doorstep,
We begged for their safety,
not fierce enough
They were stripped from our care
In the seething night air
Screams detonated outside,
but we just watched-
just watched. Helpless.
Underneath the thick clouds of gray
Bloodshed became a daily occurrence
Camouflaged into a thousand
broken glass bottles, into
broken glass bottles
Sheer shame overcame us when
Peering out the window.
On the other side, bombs flew,
Explosions blasted, people died
People died outside.
Expired lives littered the ground
Warm dark red splattered all around
But flowers still managed to grow
In the soil that caught dead bodies
Dead bodies.
Forgive us, we just stood there and watched.
