UW-P’s Cross earns WIAC POY
Pioneer men’s basketball junior center Chas Cross was named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year Monday. Cross led the conference with 15.8 points per game, 8.5 rebounds per game and free throw attempts with 137. Cross finished the season with 46 blocks, which was second in the conference, and was three away from breaking the university record for blocks in a season. He becomes the first University of Wisconsin-Platteville men’s basketball player to win WIAC Player of the Year since 2009.
Manning, Stallion, Jackson nab other WIAC postseason honors
Sophomore forward Jake Manning of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men’s basketball team was named an honorable mention on the All-WIAC men’s basketball team Monday. Manning finished the year with 8.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per contest. Senior forward Rob Stallion was named to the All-WIAC All-Defensive team. Stallion was a key on-ball defender for the Pioneers, averaging 7.9 points and 1.4 steals per game. Senior guard Marcus Jackson was named to the All-WIAC All-Sportsmanship team Monday as well.
Lawinger, Poad tabbed by WIAC
Pioneer women’s basketball senior guards Liz Lawinger and Claire Poad were selected to All-WIAC teams Tuesday by the WIAC coaches. Lawinger received an honorable mention for her 10.5 points, 2.3 steals and 3.3 assists per game this season. Lawinger set a university record for steals in a career with 219 and set a single-season university record for 90 steals. Poad was named to the all-WIAC all-Sportsmanship team.
Wrestling heads to Regional Saturday
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team will compete in their regional meet Saturday at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. Pioneer wrestlers will have to place in the top three of their weight class to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championship Wrestling Tournament March 15 and 16 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Pioneers will face stiff competition from the likes of No. 18 St. John’s, No. 20 Augsburg, No. 21 Concordia-Moorehead and conference rival University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
