The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team split a doubleheader against Fontbonne Tuesday, March 13 in Sauget, Ill. The Pioneers won the first game 4-2, and lost the second 11-3.
Pioneer senior pitcher Bill Oppriecht threw seven scoreless innings and only gave up one hit in the first game, earning his first win of the season.
In the seventh inning, the Pioneer batters gave Oppriecht some cushion after scoring two more runs, making the score 4-0.
With the win, Pioneer head coach Eric Frese earned his 100th win at UW-Platteville.
In game two, Fontbonne’s offense bounced back, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first off of senior pitcher Adam Theis.
The Pioneers cut their deficit in the third inning, bringing in two runners.
The Pioneers split puts them at 3-3 for the season.
“Our performance was similar to opening weekend. We have great pitching and defense but still are working on our hitting,” shortstop Tyler Jacobson said. “In practice we are addressing hitting to keep getting better and are trying to carry it over to get wins.”
The UW-Platteville baseball team will be traveling to Rock Island, Ill., for a three game series over spring break Friday, March 22.
