Pioneer Volleyball Wins 4-0
Platteville hits winning streak over weekend tournament
On September 13 and 14 the womens’ volleyball team went on a 4-0 run at the UW-Platteville Volleyball Invitational. The Pioneers’ first win came against Edgewood on Friday with a final score of 3-1, led defensively by freshman Stephanie Kalinowski, who had 22 digs and three assists. Sophomore CJ Johnson took charge on the offense with 36 assists and four kills. Senior Katie Jones led the team with 12 kills.
In their second game on Friday, UW-Platteville faced Cornell, shutting them out 3-0. Against Cornell the Pioneers hit .216 and held the opposing team to -.073. Platteville’s outside hitters, sophomore Olivia Kudronowicz and junior Hailey Youngren, both led the team in hitting during the match. Kudronowicz had 10 kills and hit .381, and Youngren had seven kills and hit .278.
Game three came on Saturday against Olivet, where the Pioneers came up with a 3-1 win. Sophomore Kaite Asche had a big day offensively, hitting .308 with 10 kills, as did Youngren and Kuronowicz, who hit .292 with 10 kills and .231 with 13 kills respectively. Freshman Sam Rossetti led the team with 34 assists. Freshman Stephanie Kalinowski led the defense with 23 digs, and senior Katie Jones had one solo and three assist blocks.
In their final game of the Invitational, Platteville had a 3-1 victory over Bethany Lutheran. Asche had another outstanding performance, hitting .647 with 12 kills. Sophomore Lita Solbrig led the team hitting .429 with 13 kills. Rosetti had a double-double with her 36 assists and 12 digs. She hit .455 with an additional 7 kills and led the team with five blocks.
At the end of the tournament, UW-Platteville finished with a perfect 4-0 record, improving their season record to 8-2. After their impressive individual performances, Kaite Asche and Stephanie Kalinowski both made the All-Tournament team. The Pioneers start their conference schedule at UW-Stout on September 17, and will then compete in the Mabel Lee Tournament in Cedar Rapids, IA on September 21.
