UW-Platteville Men’s Basketball

Excellent shooting led the Calvin University Knights of Grand Rapids, Michigan past the UW-Platteville men’s basketball team during the second round of the NCAA DIII Tournament at Bo Ryan Court on March 5.

The Pioneers led only once in this game, 9-7 with 12:24 remaining in the opening half. Calvin was led by Luke Morrison, who made 12-20 shots attempted and 6-7 free throws, scoring 37 points in all. UW-Platteville allowed the Knights to shoot 53.8% from the floor in the first half compared to UW-Platteville’s 41.4%. Calvin held a 38-27 lead as the game reached halftime.

In the second half, UW-Platteville kept battling, but still could not get anything to fall from beyond the arc, shooting 22.2% from outside over the final twenty minutes and going 3-16 from the three-point line for the game.

UW-Platteville did find success offensively inside, scoring 30 points in the paint and 19 points off Calvin’s turnovers. UW-Platteville’s defense also forced 17 turnovers to keep the game relatively close, but Calvin just would not let up.

The Knights were up 7 in rebounding and kept control of the game’s pace scoring 15 fastbreak points. Calvin earned the win, 76-64, advancing to the third round of the tournament.

UW-Platteville’s Justin Stovall had a very strong, double-double performance scoring 20 points securing 12 rebounds and a blocked shot as well. Quentin Shields added 15 points, finishing his career as second all-time in scoring for the Pioneers with 1,671 career points. Logan Pearson and Kyle Tuma each contributed 8 points. Tuma also added 8 rebounds.

The Pioneers finished another impressive season with an overall record of 22-6. Calvin advances to take on Elmhurst University in the third round of the tournament.
