Pioneers strive to fight hunger together

Food Fight is hosted by Campus Programming and Relations and runs from September 30th until October 5th at 6pm. This has been an annual event that is currently in its 16th year. In that time, UW-Platteville has raised over 64 tons of food for Southwest Wisconsin Food Pantries. Pantry locations include Platteville, Lancaster, Hazel Green and the pantry on campus. Every year the average amount raised is over four tons.

Each organization will have to design a box in order to patriciate in the event as long as they can follow three rules. The first one being able to supply a box to decorate and it must be appropriate within the university standards. The second is that boxes should be turned in before September 27 at 8 p.m. Boxes turned in after this time will not be eligible for spirit points. Boxes cannot exceed 24 x 24 x 24 inches in order to be eligible for points.

Points can be earned based of the creativity of the boxes. The boxes will be judged 50 percent based off creativity, 30 percent off appearance and then 20 percent based off of the required information, such as organization name and having the homecoming slogan, which is “UW-Platteville Homecoming 2018: ‘The Future is Ours’”

Food drop off is located in the Pioneer Involvement Center. Points are awarded per item, counted and then collected every night. Canned items are worth three points while everything else is worth one. Anything less than two ounces will not be counted but are not discouraged. A few rules to this event are teams being able to place non-perishable food items into any organizations’ box, the maximum amount of points that can be earned per day is 50 and once the food is placed in an organization’s box, it may not be taken out and put in another box.

This is the sixteenth year that Food Fight has taken place and is a great way of donating non-perishable food in Southwest Wisconsin.
