Football snags first WIAC win

Sophomore quarterback Bryce Corrigan led the no. 13 Pioneer football team (4-1, 1-1 WIAC) to a 40-10 win over the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (2-3, 1-1 WIAC) with a 37-43 passing performance.

Corrigan’s 86 percent completion rate, 412 yards and three touchdowns earned him NCAA.com Offensive Player of the Week and WIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Corrigan completed his first 15 passes of the game, leading to a 23-24 performance in the first half.

“If he gets comfortable he can be a hell of a quarterback, there can be a real wow factor,” offensive coordinator Ryan Munz said.

Junior wide receiver Paul Reit was Corrigan’s favorite target on the day, snagging 18 balls for 167 yards and two touchdowns. The 18 catches by Reit set a new university record.

Sophomore wide receiver Trevor Whitehead added five catches for 105 yards.

Whitehead, Reit, and junior receivers Ryley Bailey and Aaron Loferski have all had 100-yard receiving games in the Pioneers high-powered offense.

This is the first time four players have had 100-yard receiving games in the same season since 2004.

UW-La Crosse came out hot, scoring a touchdown quickly on their first possession. The Pioneers answered back with three scores, running the score to 20-7 at the end of the first quarter.

The Eagles notched a field goal early in the second quarter, but that would be the team’s last points of the game, as the Pioneers racked up 20 unanswered points from that point on.

The Pioneers hit the road again this week, taking on the no. 19 University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titans (5-0, 2-0 WIAC) Oct. 13.
