Intramural teams hit the hardwood

Intramural basketball is once again gearing up for another season at University of Wisconsin-Platteville.  The league, considered to be one of the most popular intramural sports on campus, began Jan. 28.

There are 92 teams registered to participate in intramural basketball with eight players on the average team.  Teams were divided into one of three categories based on the ability level they indicated on their registration form.

Each team will play one game per week on a designated night and time.  Games during the six-week long season will be played Monday through Thursday between 7:00 – 10:30 p.m. at Bo Ryan Court or in the multi-area of the Williams Fieldhouse.

According to Curt Fatzinger, Intramural and Pioneer Activity Center Coordinator, teams were required to pay a $25 fee when they registered, which goes into the intramural program budget and pays for the championship T-shirts.

Jake Bonsett-Veal is beginning his fourth year working as a scorekeeper for intramural basketball.

“The program has grown every year,” Bonsett-Veal said.

This season, there are 750 students signed up to play.

“Intramural basketball has a good following and I hope students are coming back because of the good experience they have had,” Fatzinger said.

In addition to providing students with exercise, intramural basketball is also helps them connect with friends and meet new people.

Calyn Bidlingmaier, a former high school basketball player, has participated in intramural basketball for two seasons.

“(I enjoy) the opportunity to be competitive again and to play with and against my friends,” Bidlingmaier said.

Intramural basketball is not just for experienced players.

“If students have not played a sport before, it is something they can play and get a new experience,” Fatzinger said.  “It is what college is about.  Students will meet people, socialize, and broaden horizons.  It is nice and stress-free.”
