Women’s Basketball: UW-Platteville vs. UW-Whitewater

The UW-Platteville women’s basketball team took the win over UW-Whitewater on Wednesday, Feb. 15, with an ending score of 61-52. This was the Pioneers’ first victory over the Warhawks since the 2014-15 season.

After the first half, the Warhawks had a 20-18 lead over the Pioneers. In the third quarter, the Pioneers led 28-25. There was a 7-point run that freshman Madalyn “Maddy” Reichmann started by landing a 3 pointer followed by Barb Kling and Lara Anger both landing layups. Later in the quarter, the Warhawks  caught up and tied the Pioneers at 32 points. Lucky for the Pioneers, Ella Mackiewicz landed two free throws, giving them a lead of 34-33 by the end of the third quarter.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Mackiewicz scored 4 fast points, increasing the Pioneers’ lead. After senior Allison Heckert made a 3-pointer, and after another layup by Brynlee Nelson, the Pioneers were up 43-36 with 7:33 remaining in the game. The Pioneers had a 7-point lead for the remainder of the last quarter, giving them the win over the Warhawks.

Mackiewicz scored a game-high 23 points on 7-to-12 with nine rebounds. Nelson also hit double digits with 10 points and five rebounds. UW-Platteville shot 32.3% from the floor and 63.6% from the free throw line.
