Eyes in the sky on Second Street

Cameras are not a new form of crime deterrence in the downtown Platteville area but they are important, all the same.
The Platteville Chief of Police, Doug McKinley stated that cameras have been around since fall of 2008 due to concerns about property damage, fights, and disorderly conduct.
Cameras are located on the corners of Second and Mineral Street, Second and Main Street, Fourth and Mineral Street, and Court and Main Street. They look similar to street lamps.
Chief McKinley wants to reassure students that the cameras are not monitored 24/7 but they are looked at by dispatch when needed. Police officers also have access to the camera footage. The archives go back 45 days.
Lieutenant Jeff Haas shared a story about the effectiveness of the cameras. “There was a fight when one young man leaving the bars defended himself but when the perpetrator reported to the police he claimed to be the victim. The cameras were able to set the story straight.”
The cameras have also helped catch people who get behind the wheel after drinking at an establishment.
One student said he did not know there were cameras on Second Street and for him it made no difference on safety.
Chief McKinley said that there are no plans for getting more cameras, but the topic is always open for discussion.
