UW-P students march in D.C.

Five University of Wisconsin-Platteville s tudents participated in the March for Life in Washington D.C., Jan. 20 through Jan. 24.
Lauren Goodale, junior, is the president of Promoting the Gift of Life or PGL. She worked with the Dubuque County Right to Life to get rides on one of their five buses.
PGL, the pro-life group on campus, wants to promote the gift of life and to support women at UW-Platteville who may become pregnant. The group was created to be a resource and friendly support system for students.
“Basically it is a peaceful protest on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade where people from all around the country, even all around the world come to stand up for life,” said Emily Stanek, a junior ornamental horticulture major, and Vice President of PGL.
Her favorite part of the march was seeing the masses of people and their excitement. The estimated number of people was 700,000. This was Stanek’s fifth time participating in the march, which is held annually on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade
The march began Thursday, Jan. 22 at noon and continued for three and a half hours. Goodale said they departed from the National Mall, made their way to the capital, and hit a snag when protestors showed up. She said that they were not near the front so their group wasn’t able to see what happened.
Stephanie Baribeau, sophomore, was not able to attend the march, but she was able to help with PGL’s cupcake event.
“PGL handed out cupcakes for the anniversary for Roe v. Wade,” Baribeau said.
The cupcakes were handed out for free on Jan. 22 to celebrate the birthdays of all the children who never got the chance to celebrate theirs, according to Goodale.
