Web Exclusive: Health and Human Performance

It was a sunny day April 16 when four health and human performance senior seminar students organized a beanbag tournament with 16-teams competing. After a long but rewarding night, two University of Wisconsin-Platteville students came out with a victory.

Bryan Whitehead, Nicole Prophett, Austin Neis and Brian Polubinski, all seniors majoring in health and human performance, have been organizing and planning the event on the infield of the outdoor track at the Williams Fieldhouse since the beginning of the semester as part of their senior seminar class project.

Polubinski said that he was very happy with the outcome and that four days before the event there were only four teams signed up.

The tournament started at 5:30 p.m. and ended at 9:15 p.m. Although it was a long tournament, the winners found their prizes to be very rewarding.

First-place winners were The Ringers: Zach Raisbeck junior building construction and management major and Joel Mezera sophomore agriculture business major. The Ringers each won a $40 gift card to Wal-Mart.

“We are ecstatic about winning the HHP bags tournament,” said Mezera. “I am going to be buying all the groceries possible with this.”

The second-place winners were Team Kale, which consisted of Adam Lange sophomore criminal justice major and Cody Rudie sophomore business administration and industrial engineering major. They each won a $10 Dunkin’ Donut gift certificate and one free blizzard a month for a year from Dairy Queen.

The third-place winners were Team Chubby’s, consisting of Andrew Belken junior civil engineering major and Jason Schneider sophomore business administration major. The winners each won a $5 gift certificate to Country Kitchen and a one-month membership to Anytime Fitness.

The HHP students raised $100 from the $10 registration fee. The profit will go to the HHP Club to continue efforts to improve the program, Prophett said.

Not only were there great prizes, there were also light refreshments for the players to enjoy in between games. According to Austin Neis, there was Jimmy John’s subs and bottled water donated by Kwik Trip for the participants. Each participant also received a token for a free small ice cream cone at Dairy Queen. The HHP senior seminar class students borrowed the bean bags and the bag boards from Platteville JC’s.

“Nicole, Brian, Austin and Bryan did an excellent job of organizing the event and making sure all the details were right where they needed to be,” Lisa Emendorfer HHP instructor. “Also, the community was very generous [in donating all the prizes and refreshments].”
